Meet the Artist Behind Downtown Bellevue's New Intersection Artwork
The upcoming installation of Esmeralda Vasquez's artwork, 'The Love Between,' in Downtown Bellevue is a significant celebration of LGBTQIA+ pride. Located at the intersection of 102nd Avenue NE and NE First Street, the artwork will feature two large, color-blocked hands and eight flowers symbolizing different facets of the queer community. Vasquez, a Latinx/LGBTQ+ artist, collected community insights to enhance the project's relevance and impact, ensuring the design resonates with various identities. The twisted green stem in the artwork represents the complexities of the queer experience, while the flowers reflect the diversity within the community. Set to be unveiled at the end of May, just before Pride Month, the installation aims to foster a sense of belonging and recognition for all. Vasquez believes that art can unite people and spark essential conversations about social justice. This initiative highlights her dedication to creating art that uplifts and empowers marginalized voices, ultimately seeking to leave a lasting legacy of inclusivity and beauty in the Bellevue area.
