Northwest Sound Creates 'Carbershop' Chorus With Drive-In Rehearsals

Amid COVID-19, Northwest Sound, a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society in Bellevue, has ingeniously transformed its rehearsals into a drive-in format known as “Carbershop.” This initiative enables singers to participate safely from their cars in a parking garage, while also accommodating virtual attendees via Zoom. Musical Director Ken Potter leads sessions that feature a variety of musical genres, from iconic theater songs such as "Aquarius" to popular hits like "Rhythm of Love." Members use sanitized wireless microphones connected to a mixing board to combat echo effects, facilitating a cohesive singing experience. With 60 active members, Northwest Sound has successfully continued its tradition of competing, having previously ranked 12th out of 800 in an international competition. The community's adaptability and commitment to music demonstrate resilience and innovation in the face of adversity. Former president Bill Hickman emphasizes the magical synergy experienced during group performances, illustrating the emotional power of collective music-making.
