BDA Advocates Position to Council on I-405 South Downtown Access

The Bellevue Downtown Association (BDA) has taken a proactive stance on I-405 access options, advocating for two alternatives to improve traffic conditions and connectivity to the forthcoming East Main light rail station. The initial study, initiated by the City of Bellevue in 2020, narrowed down potential solutions to five, with the BDA favoring the Lake Hills Connector and the SE 6th Street extension. The Lake Hills Connector is praised for its cost-effectiveness and minimal environmental impact, although it lacks the extensive connectivity offered by the SE 6th Street extension. This latter option, while providing greater mobility benefits and a multimodal connection, comes with higher costs and potential delays to other critical planning initiatives. BDA's endorsement of the SE 6th Street extension is contingent upon the timely adoption of the East Main Land Use Code, which is essential to prevent disruptions in urban planning. The BDA stressed that the selected alternative should not hinder other vital city projects, emphasizing the importance of making decisions that will support future growth. The City Council's initiative to conduct this study is commended, as it demonstrates a commitment to addressing urban growth challenges.
