Person Behind The Place Claire Sumadiwirya

Claire Sumadiwirya, the owner of Bellden Cafe in Bellevue, embarked on her entrepreneurial journey following a deeply personal experience when her son fell ill in Shanghai. During her nights at the hospital, she craved the comfort of coffee, which was hard to find, prompting her to create a welcoming space that embodies generosity and community support upon her return. Since opening in 2017, Bellden Cafe has committed to donating a portion of its sales to various local charities, such as Jubilee REACH and Overlake Hospital, reinforcing its mission-driven approach. Sumadiwirya believes that coffee shops serve as essential social spaces for everyone, regardless of economic status, fostering connections and creating a sense of belonging. The cafe’s menu features healthy, in-house made items, catering to dietary needs like gluten-free and dairy-free options, aimed at promoting well-being within the community. Sumadiwirya also prioritizes staff engagement by paying them to volunteer, creating a culture of service and connection. Looking ahead, she envisions greater collaboration between large corporations and small businesses to address local social issues effectively. Bellden Cafe stands as a testament to the power of community-focused entrepreneurship in addressing homelessness and supporting families in need.
