Emerging Radiance The Art of a Lasting Legacy

"Emerging Radiance" is an interactive art installation by Michelle Kumata, commissioned by Meta to honor the legacy of Japanese American farmers in Bellevue, Washington. The project arose from a desire to share the often-overlooked history of these farmers, particularly in light of the injustices faced during WWII. The installation, designed as a farmhouse, features larger-than-life portraits of real farmers, symbolizing their contributions and struggles. Kumata integrates oral histories to deepen the narrative and connect visitors with the past. The absence of doors in the structure signifies the silence many survivors endured, while vibrant colors evoke both sorrow and pride in their heritage. The positive reception from the Japanese American community underscores the importance of public acknowledgment and accessibility to their history. This work not only honors those who persevered but also sparks conversations about contemporary issues related to racism and injustice. The installation's interactive elements, including augmented reality, create a multisensory experience that engages visitors in a meaningful dialogue with history.
