City accepting applications for free trees

Bellevue residents can apply for free trees through the city's fifth annual Tree Giveaway, which runs until August 26 or until supplies last. This initiative, a partnership with 300 Trees and Amazon, provides 700 trees each year, featuring nine species such as coast redwood and southern magnolia to meet diverse planting needs. Applicants will receive a tree ordering date to select their preferred species based on availability, with a distribution event scheduled for October 25 at Bannerwood Sports Park. The program aims to enhance Bellevue's tree canopy, which absorbs greenhouse gases and improves air quality. Since its inception, the city has given out over 3,200 trees, distributing up to two trees to each applicant and up to 20 trees to community organizations annually. The city achieved a goal of 40% tree canopy coverage citywide in 2021, but uneven distribution remains a challenge. The initiative prioritizes areas that would benefit most from increased tree coverage. Participants will also receive free watering bags and mulch, along with planting instructions to ensure successful growth.
