Bellevue gives away 700 trees, increases citywide tree equity

The City of Bellevue's recent tree giveaway distributed over 700 free trees to local residents and organizations, in collaboration with 300 Trees and Amazon. This initiative is part of Bellevue's commitment to increasing tree equity across the city, recognizing the environmental advantages of a robust tree canopy. Since the program began, more than 3,200 trees have been provided to the community, with individual applicants allowed up to two trees and community organizations up to 20. The city reached a significant milestone in 2021 by achieving its goal of 40% tree canopy coverage, although disparities in distribution persist. By utilizing Tree Equity Scores, Bellevue prioritizes planting in areas that would benefit most from increased greenery. Participants of this year’s giveaway received watering bags and mulch to support their new saplings, along with guidance on proper planting techniques. The diversity of tree species offered each year is tailored to suit Bellevue's evolving climate conditions. Residents can learn more and apply for the next giveaway starting in June, with successful applicants notified by email in September 2025.
