Jerry and Charlene Lee donate Jacob Lawrence artwork to Bellevue
Northwest philanthropists Jerry and Charlene Lee have generously donated a lithograph print titled "Builders III" by the acclaimed artist Jacob Lawrence to the City of Bellevue. This significant artwork will be integrated into Bellevue’s public art collection and displayed in a yet-to-be-determined indoor location for public enjoyment. The Lees, recognized as the 2015 Outstanding Philanthropists by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, have a longstanding commitment to community enrichment. Their previous contributions include a piece by Gerard Tsutakawa, now displayed at City Hall. Lawrence's "Builders III," created in 1991, reflects his ongoing theme of depicting builders as symbols of progress, showcasing Black construction workers on a city street. The Bellevue Arts Commission has eagerly accepted this donation, highlighting the artwork's cultural and historical importance. Lawrence, who grew up in Harlem and self-taught himself about Black history, emphasized the piece as a "symbol of hope" and human capacity for progress. Bellevue's commitment to public art not only enriches its cultural landscape but also documents the diverse identities and experiences of its residents.
